Artists Statement

Landscape Artist working from Kew, SW London, and Balcarrick Beach, Co. Fingal.
My paintings come from places I’ve been to, not just for the place itself, but for something else that captured my imagination at the time, such as:
the colours and textures of the roofscapes of Siena,
the colours of the sky, sea and beaches of The Jurassic Coast,
on the south coast of Devon and Dorset,
the rugged landscape of The Wild Atlantic Way on the West Coast of Ireland, and
the colours of The Lake District in NW England.
Also, the random figure ground patterns of places such as Siena.
Some places really catch one’s eye,
but not everywhere touches one’s Soul!

Typically, I’ll see a view that catches my eye and start to frame or compose it on my camera to see if it captures the essence of the place as I see it.
Back in my studio, I’ll start to compose it by deciding on the overall extent of the painting I have in mind, and, at the same time, breaking it down, or sub dividing the view, into a series of vignettes.
Then I take quite a broad-brush approach, blocking out the colours as I see them, building up each colour by applying layers of different colours, as opposed to the more traditional approach of mixing them ‘off canvas’ as it were.

I find that by building the paint up in layers, I get an effect not too dissimilar to Pointillism, in that I’m combining several layers (as opposed to dots or dabs) of colour to get the overall colour I’m after.
It adds a certain texture to the painting.
Also I find that working with Emulsion Paint I get both the fluidity of Watercolours and the richness of Oils.
